What is Strong and Stable?

Strong and Stable is a Judo-inspired program designed for adults 55+ to prevent falls and reduce their impact. In Judo, understanding how to fall is one of the first skills learned (ukemi, or fall-breaking). This method helps distribute impact and protect the body. By combining Judo, strength, and balanced- based training, students will learn how to prevent falls, and avoid serious fall-related injuries.

By 2030, the global population aged 65 and above is estimated to reach a staggering one billion. Falls are the leading cause of injury for this demographic. Older adult falls are common, costly, and preventable. The fear of falling breeds a vicious cycle—avoidance of activity leading to muscle deterioration, a decline in balance, and subsequently an increased likelihood of falls.

This fear isn’t merely physical; it spirals into isolation and loneliness, impacting mental and physical well-being. It’s a poignant reality: the fear of falling directly correlates with the likelihood of falling.

What are the benefits of joining the Strong and Stable program?
Each week, students focus on a key falling technique progressing from low-impact seated exercises to standing movements. With guided instruction, practice on padded mats, and a supportive class environment, participants develop essential skills to stay active. This six-week program teaches participants how to:

- Build coordination
- Build awareness
- Build strength
- Learn how to fall safely
What are the instructors credentials?
Strong and Stable was founded by AJM, Atlanta’s premier Judo school. For over 30 years, AJM has provided high-level judo instruction to kids and adults teaching hundreds of students how to throw and fall, safely.

AJM instructors received training with SureMove, a Dutch-based Judo program with over 15 years of experience in teaching the elderly how to fall safely,  and get up quickly. Under the guidance of AJM’s owner, Emmy-nominated stunt man and 4th degree  black belt, Sensei Matt Scheib, Strong and Stable was developed for and adapted for American students.

Classes are taught out of AJM’s dojo, located in Piedmont Heights. The facility is equipped with padded flooring, and Strong and Stable students use large foam crash pads for falling-related preventative exercises.
Data provided by the CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control and The National Council on Aging (NCOA)

- 14 Million: The number of adults who report falling every year
- 3 million: The number of emergency department visits each year due to older people falls
- 38,000: The number of fall-related deaths in 2021 among those age 65+
- $18,658: The estimated annual average cost per inpatient visit for falls injuries
- $101 billion: The projected cost increase of treating fall injuries among older adults by 2030
